When we first worked with our friends at Joe Van Gogh late last year on an idea we had for a barrel-aged coffee IPA (also called Uncommon Grind as a means to "kick things off", available as a December release this year), they were pretty psyched about working with us to barrel-age green coffee beans in different types of oak barrels and really explore the relationship between the barrels we use for some of our beer and the beans they source from all over the world. The first run last holiday season saw us aging organic Colombian beans in fresh-emptied Peach Brandy barrels, and our customers couldn't get enough of them.
So we decided to turn Uncommon Grind into an ongoing project we'd revisit each holiday season, working with Joe Van Gogh to age coffee beans in new barrels we get our hands on that we think might work nicely.
For this round, we've worked with Joe Van Gogh to help age over 100 pounds of green coffee beans sourced from a small group of growers in the Huila region of Colombia in a couple of freshly-dumped Peach Brandy oak barrels, and then selected & roasted in a tiny batch just for Haw River Farmhouse Ales' customers. Look for notes of black currant & cinnamon with a touch of bright stonefruit skin, and a buttery, boozy backbone balanced with a light chocolate roast and cracked cocoa beans.
The first batch we released last year sold out fast, so don't wait too long to get these peach brandy barrel-aged coffee beans in your hands and into your favorite coffee cup soon!
